Killing Gmail Sponsored Links

Inspired by a post on BoingBoing I did some of my own testing to see if I could kill off the sidebar advertising (aka Sponsored Links), similar to Google AdWords, that appear in the Gmail web client.

Using keywords in the email content, Gmail annoyingly renders targeted advertisements which they call ‘relevant advertising’. Here is Gmail’s policy.

Gmail, however, chooses to ‘block ads from running next to messages about catastrophic events or tragedies’.

Google Friend Connect

This week is Google Friend Connect week for the member sites of JapanSoc community. This community boasts in excess of 200 members who are generally regarded as Japan-related web users.

Much talk has been made about how to bring this community closer together with a debate over at JapanSoc (the .com not the .org) being the catalyst for some interesting thoughts.

You Digg, Dawg?

Maybe it’s me. I thought that I had a funny submission that was Digg-worthy. So, I Dugg it and I only got one other Digg, from a mate. A gratuitous ‘sympathy’ Digg.

DiggI mean, everyday there are stupid, quirky submissions to the Digg community that get hundreds, if not thousands of Diggs. And if I see one more horrendously popular Digg of the ‘Top 7′ things that I didn’t know about something… well… for [expletives] sake!
