Due to censorship, Japan is infamous for using a wide variety of stand-ins for the phallus. The use of tentacles for example has a long history, dating back to the 19th century when Edo period artist Hokusai was one of the first to depict tentacle erotica with The Dream of the Fisherman’s Wife, and the following sub-genre of women engaging in sexual activity with sea creatures.

In what appears to be porn that only a locksmith can appreciate Door Knob Girl has appeared on the scene, and bless her E. coli licking heart. Door Knob Girl is a website gone viral that features, you guessed it, a collection of photos of girls licking doorknobs.

It begs the question – has Door Knob Girl been spawned by all of the pixelation and mosaicing required by the Japanese censorship laws to obscure genitalia in Japanese pornography or is she just another one of those “Only in Japan” fetishes? According to it’s creators – artist Ryuko Azuma and photographer Ai Ehara – Door Knob Girl is simply psychosexual art.

Sea Chicken Star Wars

The Tuna is strong in this one.

There was a great disturbance in the Force when Japanese canned food producer Hagoromo Foods, one of Japan’s most famed producers of ‘sea chicken’ tuna fish in a can, broadcast the below “Star Wars” sea chicken commercial back in 1978.

Using the Force, Hagoromo Foods seems to suggest that the galaxy far, far away would have found peace if only they had the opportunity to indulge in a bit of Hagoromo canned tuna together. Incidentally, the hit film “Star Wars” had opened in Japan the same year that the sea chicken commercial was broadcast.

I wonder if the commercial is a complete rip-off or back in 1978 George Lucas got a silent cut for it and just thought that nobody outside of Japan would ever see it.

Used Panties Vending Machines

Vending machines stocked with used schoolgirl panties may be one of the most often quoted Japanese urban legends, but do they actually exist?

There is no doubt that, to satisfy the auto-erotic practices of panty fetishists, a thriving market for used innerwear does exist in Japan. “Panty fetish” even has it’s own specific term in the Japanese language. “Burusera” (ブルセラ) is a portmanteau coined by combining two words: ‘burumā’ and ‘sērā-fuku’. “Burumā” means bloomers (as in bottoms of gym suits) and “sērā-fuku” means sailor suit (the traditional Japanese school uniforms for schoolgirls).

“Burusera” shops, catering to kinky needs of undergarment fetishism, trade in this sexual desire. The merchandise is often accompanied by ostensibly genuine photos of the girls wearing them, like a ‘certificate of authenticity’ acting not only as an endorsement that the item is authentic, but as an advertisement to entice customers to purchase so they can smell or otherwise experience the panties for sexual stimulation.

Vending machines exist in Japan that dispense underwear that has supposedly been previously worn by schoolgirls. The sale of such garmentry, however, has been outlawed in Japan which has caused the undergarment to go underground. The question therefore remains as to the authenticity of the product that can be found in Japenese vending machines today. Are they actually used underwear and/or schoolgirl underwear or just advertised as such?

1. Pepsi Ice Cucumber 「ペプシアイスキューカンバー」

Limited edition green, cucumber-flavored Pepsi sold in Japan in summer 2007. There were no cucumber involved to actually make it, just a combination of artificial flavors to achieve “the refreshing taste of a fresh cucumber”.

2. Pepsi Shiso 「ペプシしそ」

Limited edition green shiso-flavored soda introduced in Japan during summer 2009. Shiso is the Japanese name for perilla. The perilla herb is sometimes known as purple mint, Japanese basil or or wild coleus.

An azuki bean-flavored limited edition Pepsi released in Japan on October 20, 2009. Azuki beans are red beans used in sweet meals, snacks and dishes in Japan.
