The Eastern Bloc

Sunset in VeniceI just wanted to start this by saying that the Euro sucks! Since the introduction of the Euro, countries that were traditionally cheaper for travellers have had extravagent price hikes. It has been reported that places have had as much as a 50% increase in inflation since the Euro came into effect. The only good thing about the Euro is that you don’t have to change money all the time, however, the cost of goods is expensive, the exchange rate is crap and the service is generally below standard.

Lee in MunichNow that I have that off of my chest… right now we are in Copenhagen. I heard it was easy for an Aussie to find a prince here so I am wearing my best crutchless leopard skin’s whilst out and about.

After Venice we made it to Munich (via Innsbruck). Munich meant drinking steins of Lowenbrau in Lowenbrau biergartens whilst eating kransky´s and sauerkrat. What more in life is there? I was happy to say that this was the first place in Europe that Foster’s advertising did not dominate around bar and club areas.

At a biergarten in MunichFrom Munich we ventured down into Slovenia. What a great place! Aside from the fact that they love Foster’s beer – the Slovenian’s are a great bunch of people. Izumi and I left Slovenia with so much undiscovered and a feeling that this is a place worth returning to.

Lee and Izumi in ViennaFrom Slovenia we went to Vienna – where incidentally I am devastated that I did not manage to have a Vienna Schnitzel (in Vienna I guess they are just called ‘Schnitzel’) – and then across to Budapest (I had Hungarian Goulash… but it didn’t make up for the missing schnitzel) for the start of our “Eastern Bloc” tour.

The “Eastern Bloc” tour is the best we can do ’cause we are not brave enough to do the “Axis of Evil” tour (maybe next time) or even theHungarian Goulash in Budapest “Prisoner Abuse” tour of Iraq, Afghanistan and Guantanamo. [My apologies for anyone offended by any political incorrectness] :-)

Anyways, from Budapest we went to Bratislava in Slovakia and then onto Prague in the Czech Republic. Special Note: After eating in a restaurant in the Czech Republic don’t ask for the ‘cheque’. They usually bring out some under-aged Czech girl :-)

Izumi's foot on the Berlin WallFrom Prague we went to Berlin and stood at the place where JFK did his famous (or infamous) “Ich bin ein Berliner” speech to a crowd of thousands of West Berliners – which incidentally translates as “I am a Jelly Donut”.

From Berlin we did any overnighter in Hamburg before arriving in Copenhagen yesterday.

Lee and Izumi in PortoWell, the weather has improved… enough that I can almost feel that I almost got sunburnt one day.

We made it through Portugal… barely… drank way to much 40-year old Port in Porto! Then went to Madrid via Lisbon then on to Barcelona. Barcelona was fantastic!

Delicious prawn dish in PortoMade our way to Nice. The Mediteranean is beautiful but the rocky beaches are just wrong (can you call it a beach if there are no waves???). People sunbake on the rocks. It is like they are getting a Swedish massage and a tan at the same. Weird! Called into Cannes and copped the back-end of the film festival. Sat next to a film producer on the train… although we chatted, he never picked out my amazing acting ability!!! Then made a stop-over in Monaco and copped a bit of the Grand Prix – talk about unplanned yet well-timed.

Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada FamíliaThe train ride from Barcelona to Nice was amazing… all the way along the Riviera… the train line runs right along side the Mediteranean.

From there, we made our way to Milan… at this point Izumi got really (how you say in Italian) ‘pisa’d off’ and wanted to end the holiday because we got ripped off in a cafe. She decided that she hated Italians. It only lasted one night… until we got to Venice… and now she loves them again. Now she hates Germans because a big German guy stepped on her foot. She already hated Brits because we had to work with a group of them. I told her that she should just be like and me and just hate everyone! Its easier.

Lee in Monte CarloRight now we are in Venice. Tomorrow, we will travel to Innsbruck in Austria on our way to Munich for BEER!!! Havent decided what to do after that but the thought is something like Munich to Slovenia, Slovenia to Vienna, Vienna to Prague, Prague to Berlin… the rest is way to far ahead.

Lee in Saint EmilionWell, Izumi and I made it through Bordeaux´s vineyards relatively unscathed. We spent a total of 5 days in the region.

We are now in Porto, Portugal after making an “all-nighter” across Spain and the Iberian peninsular.

The weather's lousy but our cocktails are greatThe weather has been pretty crappy. When we were in London, we thought the rain, drizzle and overcast days was actually really good weather for the British… well, the Brits were in singlets and shorts with zinc cream on their noses. But, the bad weather seemed to follow us to Paris, then to the south of France. Now it is in Portugal.

I blame Izumi… why? Because I can! Ok, because she isn´t watching as I type this.
