The Japanese weekly rag Shūkan Asahi (週刊朝日), a popular general-interest magazine, weighs in on the Borat mankini being a hit in Japan with the full-page advertisement below. The Shūkan Asahi has been published since 1922 by The Asahi Shimbun, one of Japan’s leading newspapers.
The format of the publication usually combines soft news like scandals and affairs, some international rumours and relations, an occasional golf tip, a few comics that are a little erotic in nature and swimsuit models (usually on the front and back of the mag). The publication is generally targeted to Japanese salarymen.
As you can see in the image below provided by nateola from PinkNihon, it is full of high-quality content. This particular image is an advertisement that promotes a Japanese Adult Video (JAV) about a promiscuous orgy with the tagline “Sex–it’s supposed to be raunchy”. Do you find it bizarre that, in Japan, these types of full-page advertisements appear in popular mainstream publications? I mean, are we too prudish in the West?

By “the west” you probably mean the USA? Then yes, the “west” is too prudent.
In the UK you have “the sun” tabloid which has featured bikini models on page 3 since the beginning of time. Most other european countries news stands are bulging with “lads” magazines like FHM and whatnot.
fair point henk, although i wasn’t specifically talking about the usa. do european lads mags have full-page raunchy advertisements promoting adult videos? maybe they do.
i guess my real question is, do the japanese take it to the extreme? rather than asking “are the West is too prudish?” I probably should have asked “are the Japanese too salacious?”

No mainstream publication would accept an advertisement from an adult video producer. They feel they would be subjected to an anti-erotica zealots group’s boycott campaign. And if the USA has a lot of erotic videos, it has just as many anti-erotica zealots.
What is more surprising about Japanese print publications is their mentions that a particular AV actress has an unmosaiced video in release “somewhere“. Now those are technically “illegal” in Japan – but people generally know where they can obtain it.
