UPDATE: This edition of the Japan Blog Matsuri has now been published. All of the fantastic submissions can be viewed on the Famous Japanese People post.

Welcome to the theme announcement for the January 2010 edition of the Japan Blog Matsuri! This month’s edition introduces a special matsuri twist, a whopping ¥10,000 (roughly US$100) is up for grabs in a ‘matsuri cash giveaway’ and will be awarded to the two best submissions of this month’s matsuri. That’s ¥5,000 (roughly US$50) for each winner! And the best thing is, everyone is invited to participate.

How will the two best submissions be judged, I hear you ask? All is revealed right here in this post so keep reading to learn more.

Before we get into the specifics of the instructions and guidelines of this month’s matsuri, a big up to Dumb Otaku for hosting the previous Japan Blog Matsuri on Technology.

Theme

“Famous Japanese People”

In this edition of the matsuri tell us about your favourite Japanese celebrity, public figure or historical figure. The possibilities are endless. It could be a musician, a model, an actor, a personality, an athlete, an author, a politician, a member of the royal family or even a shogun to name a few. For the anime fans, game fans and otaku amongst us, the definition also extends to 2D so Japanese anime, manga and game characters are acceptable.

Rules and Guidelines

Aside from contributing within the context of the theme, there are only two very simple rules to follow:

How to Submit

Following are the two ways to submit an article:

Deadline

The deadline for submissions to this matsuri is midnight Thursday 21st January 2010 (Tokyo time).

Matsuri Cash Giveaway FAQ

For the first time in Japan Blog Matsuri history the submitters of the two best articles to this matsuri, as deemed by the readers, will be awarded a donation of ¥5,000 each (roughly US$50) paid via PayPal.

How do I enter?

It’s easy! To be in the draw all you need to do is submit an eligible article to this month’s matsuri. An eligible article is a submission that complies with the above mentioned rules and guidelines and is received before the submission deadline.

How will the two best submissions be judged?

All eligible articles will be submitted to JapanSoc.com. You can do it yourself or I can do it for you. The two articles with the most amount of soc’s (votes) on JapanSoc.com by midnight Friday 29th January 2010 (Tokyo time) Sunday 31st January 2010 (Tokyo time) will be deemed the winners and awarded the prize. Judges decision will be final.

What if more than two submissions qualify?

If more than two submissions qualify for the prize a tie-breaker will be required. The prize will be awarded first based upon number of socs and next based upon chronology of submission. So, the earlier you submit your article the more airtime you have to get soc’s as well as a better chance at surviving a tie-break.

Can I ’soc’ my own submission?

By all means.

When will the winners be announced?

The January 2010 Japan Blog Matsuri will be published on Monday 25th January 2010. The winners of the ‘matsuri cash giveaway’ will be announced one week later on Sunday 31st January 2010 Tuesday 2nd February 2010.

Why is the prize quoted in Yen?

It is the Japan Blog Matsuri and it’s participation is global. One common denominator though is Japan, so the Japanese currency was chosen as the basis for the cash giveaway.

How much is ¥5,000 anyways?

It all depends upon the exchange rate for your particular currency at the time of payment however as a rough guide ¥5,000 is currently around US$50. When payment is made to the winners PayPal will convert it at the prevailing exchange rate.
