This was an all-time classic… but was really especially popular in Australia (and I think the UK). The funny thing is, my wife and her family/friends laugh when they found out I had Monkey DVD’s… for them it was hugely successful (and yes, my wife used to watch it to in Japan), but these sorts of things have very short shelf-life. They don’t seem to have much time for nostalgia (unless perhaps for anime).

Anyway – long live King Monkey!

Yeah, I loved “Monkey” as a kid too. I haven’t seen the remake but feel strangely compelled to see it now, even if it does star Shingo Mama.

I loved “Monkey” as a kid. Always used to watch it with my dad. Have you seen the remake with Shingo Katori (of SMAP fame)? It’s absolutely terrible!

The hugely talented Sakai Takaaki and Nishida Toshiyuki have enjoyed very successful entertainment careers since their days on Monkey. Kishibe Shiro became one of Japan's most famous showbiz bankrupts, and the beautiful Natsume Masako was tragically taken by leukemia at the age of 27. Loved this show as a kid. When they revived it for a movie last year, it helped propel the career of a gaijin J-pop band Monkey Magik, who are actually one of the better bands around these days.

Thanks JapanZone. I was particularly intrigued to see Nishida Toshiyuki just recently in The Ramen Girl with Brittany Murphy.
