Yeah--agreed. There really are many great places to visit in Kyoto. Perhaps instead of 5 places to visit in Kyoto, the 'protocol' could be expanded to include a 5 day visit instead? :-)

@nateola and @Joe Ellis: Good choice on Sanjusangen-do. Should be part of every itinerary. Maybe it is too hard to have a top 5 for Kyoto. Too many good places that shouldn't be missed.

I also really recommend the Sanjusangen-do. It is always my favorite place to go in Kyoto, and amazing as no two statues are the same (or so they say anyways)

Good list.

I might also recommend the Sanjusangen-do and Nanzen-ji.

A personal favorite are the gardens behind the Heian Jingu.

The temples in Kyoto are certainly a worthy visit, especially if taking someone from out of country. The Kyoto circuit should include the bamboo forest, too. Preferrably in the early morning or in the evening.

No one told me about that protocol! I've been living here for 5 years now and still haven't been to half of the places you mentioned!

I'm with you on the bikes, but a scooter would be even faster! ~

I think that bikes is a great choice for travel around Kyoto. Waiting for buses is painful and cabs can get expensive. I was lugging a 3-year old kid around so I read your comment with envy. :-)

Thanks Hao. Zoomz had an itinerary of about 30 temples for our 2 day stay. I negotiated it down to about 10 + 1 pub.
